What type of detector ionisation, optical or heat?

Ionisation smoke alarms.These are the most well known type of smoke alarm, they are particularly suitable for fast flaming fires, where there is little smoke and are suitable for general use. These are the type that tend to go off rather frequently if put too close to kitchens.

Optical smoke alarms. These sense visible smoke particles and are good for smouldering fires (such as foam furniture). They respond to a wide range of fires and are suitable for general use. Optical alarms are also less prone to false alarms from cooking vapours! Optical smoke alarms should be fitted in bedsits or rooms where people smoke.

Heat alarms.The heat alarm is a fixed temperature type, for use in areas where, due to high levels of dust or fumes, a conventional smoke alarm is not suitable. Heat alarms are not available in control panel starter systems.
